The purposes of the workshop
were:
to review electronics progress for the LHC experiments,
to present results and original concepts for electronics research and
development relevant to possible future upgrades of the LHC,
to present innovative electronics developments for other particle,
astroparticle and space physics experiments,
to identify and encourage common efforts for the development of electronics
within and between the different experiments,
to promote collaboration in the relevant engineering and physics
communities.
The main subjects of the workshop were recent research and developments in
the following areas
relevant to particle physics experiments:
Tracking, Calorimetry, Muon Detection and Triggering Systems;
Accelerator and Beam Instrumentation;
Astrophysics and Space Applications;
Custom Analogue and Digital Circuits;
Circuit Developments in Deep Sub-micron Technologies;
Applications of Programmable Digital Logic and Embedded Processing;
Optoelectronic Data Transfer and Control;
Radiation and Magnetic Tolerant Components and Systems;
Electronics Assembly and Hybrid Packaging Technologies;
Production, Testing, Quality Assurance and Reliability;
Power Management and Conversion;
Grounding, Shielding and Cooling;
The welcome address was given by Geoff Hall, chairperson of the programme
committee, and the introduction was given by Juan Antonio Fuster Verdú, the
Director of IFIC.
One half-day (Plenary Session 5) was devoted to important issues for the
electronics of the experiments at a possible future luminosity upgrade of
the LHC machine. This took the form of a number of presentations on selected
topics, each followed by an extended discussion session. The topics covered
included SLHC machine issues; efficient power delivery and distribution on
the detectors; timing distribution, control and data readout links; and
options for optical links.
Two dedicated working group meetings were held, one on microelectronics and
the other on optoelectronics.
